  • Abstract
When speaking about interethnic relationships, one of the most important matter from a theorical and practical point of view, is the effect caused by contact among different groups. A widespread belief is that contact and cooperation among different groups are two of the most powerful means of reducing prejudice and conflict. However, a large number of studies shows evidence both in favour and against the real opportunity of dissipating prejudice through contacts.
Actually, a casual contact, besides not being able to reduce prejudice, could even exacerbate it, developing mental negative associations. Therefore contacts would be useful only if linked to a relation based on direct acquaintance, which, through a number of new information, would challenge prior prejudicial beliefs.
In the Province of Rome, there is a consistent number of immigrants now working, living and growing their children. The data used in this research come from the schools located in the said area. The objective is to understand if relationships (both based on casual contacts and on direct acquaintance) among Italian students and immigrant strangers could favor or prevent prejudice proliferation.
